Waste Connections of Canada (Waste Connections) undertook an Environmental Screening Process to increase the annual fill rate at the Ridge Landfill. The landfill increased its approved annual fill rate by 300,000 tonnes and can currently receive 1.6 million tonnes per year. This increase enables Waste Connections to meet the increased demand for disposal capacity from its current customers. All changes occur within the Site's existing and approved waste footprint and Site boundaries. No other changes were proposed.
The Environmental Screening Process was carried out in accordance with the Guide to Environmental Assessment Requirements for Waste Management Projects, as required by Ontario Regulation 101/07 of the Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the process, Waste Connections’ team of environmental experts carried out technical analysis to determine the potential impacts associated with increasing the annual fill rate at the Ridge Landfill. The findings are presented in the Environmental Screening Report (ESR).
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help Ontario reach its 2030 climate change goals, Waste Connections of Canada (Waste Connections) with the support of Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas), is building a brand new renewable natural gas plant at the Waste Connections Ridge Landfill in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario.
The new RNG facility is comprised of an upgrading and compression system to upgrade landfill gas to an RNG quality that is suitable for injection into the Enbridge Gas mainline natural gas network. The facility removes oxygen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide and any other compounds necessary in order to inject clean gas into the pipeline. A small portion of the Ridge Landfill site is leased to Enbridge Gas to operate the new metering station to receive renewable natural gas from the new plant and to meter the gas into the main distribution network.
The new building houses any significant noise generating equipment e.g. compressors. Outdoor equipment includes piping, vessels and an off-specification enclosed gas flare that would only be used if needed.
All approvals are in place from the Ontario Energy Board and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Amendments to existing Ridge Landfill Environmental Compliance Approvals: ECA# A021601 (Waste) and ECA#2395-BVDTGX (Air) were necessary and were largely focused on any potential noise or air emissions that might occur in addition to those associated with existing site operations.
Construction started in 2023 and completed in 2025. Please see our RNG facility announcement and endorsement by the Minister of Environment in our News section.
The very significant capital investment in this new plant by Waste Connections will ultimately generate enough clean and renewable energy from landfill gas to heat the equivalent of over 18,000 homes (about 40% of Chatham-Kent) and offset greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in excess of 110,000 tonnes per year.
